Yearbook Prank Felony: Student Who Played Joke on Peer Arrested, Faces Serious Charges

A student from Columbia, Mo. faces felony charges following her arrest for playing a prank in her high school yearbook.

The 17-year-old Hickman High School student was arrested on May 14 after she reportedly entered a student's last name as "Masturbate" instead of "Mastain" in the yearbook.

Because of this seemingly harmless prank, the student might be charged with first-degree property damage, a felony and harassment, reported CBS News.

Spencer Bartlett, Assistant Boone County prosecutor, told CBS on Tuesday that the case is still under review, and no formal charges have been brought against the student just yet.

In response to the prank, Hickman High staff has stopped all reprints of the 720 yearbooks that students ordered-instead, covering portions of the pages bearing the student's altered name with stickers that read "Mastain," the student's correct name.

Yearbook adviser Kim Acopolis told CBS that having to reprint the yearbooks would cost the school $41,000.

When asked about the student whose prank went south, Acopolis said the 17-year-old most likely did not possess any foresight on the matter.

"I do not think [she] had any sense of the consequences that would come," Acopolis said.

Raigan Mastain, whose name was changed in the yearbook, was also on yearbook staff. She said she holds no grudge with the girl who pulled the prank, waving it away as an act of immaturity, not malice.

"I hardly knew her at all," Mastain said. "I barely worked with her. We weren't friends. But I don't think I had any problems with her."

Mastain also said that the charges her peer currently faces are shocking, but that the school's policies must be followed.

"At some point, when someone makes a mistake, there needs to be a consequence," Mastain said. "I do think it's appropriate. It's bullying. The property damage is an enormous amount of money. It's not to be taken lightly."
