Corona is voluntarily recalling certain packages of Corona Extra's 12-ounce glass bottles in the U.S. because they may contain small glass particles, according to the company's website.
Constellation Brands Beer Division, owners of Corona, has issued a recall for select 6-pack, 12-pack and 18-pack packages of the 12-ounce clear glass bottles, after inspectors found defects in certain bottles that can cause small glass particles to break off and fall into the beer, according to Corona.
"We are troubled by this development and are working proactively with our distributors, retailers and consumers to solve this situation as quickly as possible," said Bill Hackett, president of Constellation Brands Beer Division. "Our entire organization ... is absolutely committed to doing everything possible to complete this recall quickly, and ensure the safety of our consumers and integrity of our product."
Corona attributed the defect to a production error at one of their four glass plants used to supply them with bottles. The glass plant is run by third party manufacturers. It is believed that less than one percent of the plant's produced bottles are affected, according to Corona.
"Our goal is to have as much of the affected product in our control as possible," officials stated online.
Corona says consumers can check if they are in possession of the recalled product by verifying the the 8-digit alphanumeric code printed on the necks of the beer's 12-ounce bottles, or on the side panels of the cardboard cartons of 12 packs and 18 packs.
Corona also noted the following products are safe and not affected by the error: Corona Extra cans, Corona Extra 24-pack loose bottles, Corona Extra 24 oz. bottle, Corona Extra draft beer, Corona Light bottles, Corona Light cans, Corona Light draft beer, Corona Familiar and Coronitas.
The beer company advises consumers not to drink the possibly contaminated beer and call the consumer call center for a refund at 1-866-204-9407. To check if your beer is affected, click here for the codes.
