Billy Crystal and Robin Williams shared the stage many times making people laugh. On Emmys night, Crystal will stand alone to pay somber tribute to his fallen friend.
Emmys executive producer Don Mischer made the announcement on Wednesday at the yearly awards event's official "red carpet rollout," according to E! News.
"We felt we needed to do something powerful and memorable," Mischer said. "Billy seemed like the perfect choice."
The Emmys producer confirmed plans for a special Williams' tribute after the actor's suicide on Aug. 11.
"Plans for the in memoriam segment are in discussion," Mischer said in a statement at the time. "While we are still coming to terms with this week's tragic news, we are working to give Robin Williams the proper and meaningful remembrance he so well deserves."
Crystal simply tweeted, "No words," the day after his friend's passing.
Crystal and Williams worked together on stage and on screen many times during their nearly 40 year friendship. They co-starred in the 1997 comedy "Father's Day" and made a special guest appearance together on "Friends" during season three.
The two comedians also co-hosted telethons for the Comic Relief charity with Whoopi Goldberg. The HBO specials helped raise funds to help those in need, especially America's homeless.
The Emmys will air Monday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC. Seth Meyers will host.
