Snapchat is reportedly looking into providing its users with news stories and advertisements.
The new additions would come in the form of Snapchat Discovery, a service that has been a topic of discussion between the startup and advertisers and media companies in recent weeks, according to The Wall Street Journal. Insiders revealed that the service is scheduled to become available in November.
One source said that at least a dozen newspapers, magazines, news networks and other media companies have offered to contribute content for Snapchat Discovery, including British newspaper The Daily Mail's news website, MailOnline.
By holding a finger on the screen of their mobile device, users would be able to read daily editions of publications and watch video clips of movies and TV shows, The Wall Street Journal reported.
While advertisements haven't been shown on Snapchat yet, the mobile app introduced Snapchat Stories last year to let users and companies post "Snaps," or disappearing messages, on the network. The Snaps would be available for a full 24 hours, and a user can watch them as many times as they want in that time frame, Mashable reported.
Some companies, such as Taco Bell and McDonald's, have also created accounts on Snapchat in order to put out promotions for their brands.
Evan Spiegel, the 24-year-old CEO of Snapchat, has also been meeting with ad executives in New York to bring more advertising to the app, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company brought up different statistics: users send over 500 million snaps per day, 13 to 17-year-olds make up more than 50 percent of the app's users and the average user checks their account 14 times every day.
