Ebola Virus Outbreak 2014: American Ebola Patient to be Discharged

At least one of two American aid workers who were infected with Ebola will be discharged today from Emory University hospital, according to The Associated Press.

Samaritan's Purse spokeswoman Alison Geist confirmed Dr. Kent Brantly will be released today from the hospital, though she did not know the exact time of his discharge, according to AP.

Atlanta's Emory University Hospital is set to hold a press conference today at 11 a.m. ET to discuss the planned discharge, according to Forbes.

"Today I join all of our Samaritan's Purse team around the world in giving thanks to God as we celebrate Dr. Kent Brantly's recovery from Ebola and release from the hospital," said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse.

Brantly, a 33-year-old physician from Texas, and Nancy Writebol, a medical hygienist, were both working in Liberia when they were infected with the disease, which is spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, according to Forbes.

The two missionaries were brought back to the states to receive treatment earlier this month and have been treated in Emory University's Serious Communicable Disease Unit, according to Forbes.

It is not known if Nancy will also be discharged today, though the hospital did say they will be holding "a news conference regarding the discharge of two Ebola virus-infected patients treated at the hospital's Infectious Disease Unit," Forbes reported.

Both Americans received an experimental drug called ZMapp and Brantly was said to have received a blood transfusion from a boy he treated who recovered from Ebola, Forbes stated.

The Ebola outbreak is the largest of its kind, infecting 2,473 people and claiming at least 1,350 victims, according to Reuters.

"I have marveled at Dr. Brantly's courageous spirit as he has fought this horrible virus with the help of the highly competent and caring staff at Emory University Hospital," Graham said.
