An Ohio woman is in the slammer after stopping at nothing to escort her son to his school's breakfast, according to The Associated Press.
Jessica Smallwood, 25, of Akron, went to escort her 7-year-old son to breakfast at Glover Elementary School on Feb. 21, but was outraged after being told she needed a visitor's badge, according to The Akron Beacon Journal.
But instead of getting a badge, Smallwood pushed a teacher, knocked the principal to the ground and punched a cafeteria worker.
Although Smallwood has past convictions for trafficking marijuana and attempted tampering with evidence, she has never served prison time, according to the Akron Beacon Journal,
This will soon change, however, as a Summit County judge has sentenced Smallwood to 14 months in jail after she pleaded guilty on Wednesday to three counts of assault that were then upgraded to felonies because they involved educators, according to AP.
Smallwood wanted to escort her special needs son that day because he was being bullied, though she often had breakfast with him at school, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
But Smallwood's sister thinks there's more to the story.
"She's not a bad person ... That's out of character for my sister," Jennifer Smallwood told Ohio.com.
"She loves kids. She was just trying to eat breakfast with her son. I don't know how this got blown up," Jennifer old Ohio.com. "There's got to be some other explanation."
