Microsoft Set To Debut Windows 9 Preview On September 30: Report

Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch Windows 9, the successor to its Windows 8 desktop operating system, on September 30.

Microsoft, the world's largest software developing company, is reportedly planning a special press event on September 30 to unveil the preview version of the next Windows iteration, according to The Verge , citing people familiar with the company's plans. The so-called Windows 9, internally known as Windows Threshold, is currently under works but a developer build will be ready by the end of next month or early October.

The latest update on Windows 9 launch follows a similar report from ZDNet last week. The tech blog reported Microsoft's plans to launch a "technology preview" of Threshold end of September or early October. But the latest report is the first to give a precise date.

There has been no concrete evidence that the Windows 8 successor will be called Windows 9 but The Verge reported that Microsoft's numbering scheme for its desktop operating systems may follow the usual norm.

Detailing some of the highlights of the upcoming Windows OS, previous leaks have pointed towards a new mini Start menu, windowed Metro-Style apps to run on the desktop, support for virtual desktops and the elimination of the Charms bar. In addition, the Redmond-based software titan is looking to integrate its highly-capable Cortana digital assistant into Windows 9.

Both reports from ZDNet and the Verge have indicated that the technical preview of the upcoming Windows OS will not just be limited to developers. In fact, general Windows users interested in taking raw OS out for a spin can sign up for Threshold.

Microsoft hasn't commented on the ongoing rumors about the Windows 9 but if the reports are true, there will be a lot to look out for next month.
