The mysterious 'selfie' couple, who were persons of interest in a burglary case in Southern California, are not involved in the crime, police clarified Thursday.
Police released a 'selfie' photo of a couple believed to have robbed a Santa Clarita woman's house on Wednesday. According to officials, they might have taken a picture of themselves on the iPhone, which was reported stolen in the burglary July 30, and the photo was uploaded to iCloud by mistake. iCloud stores data, such as music and other applications on remote computer servers.
The photo was noticed by the owner of the phone while checking iCloud. She then informed police who, in turn, released the selfie picture deeming the couple as possible suspects.
As the selfie went viral, Larry Beltran Jr., the man pictured in the photo, went to the Santa Clarita Sheriff's department and told the officials that his aunt had bought him the phone at a swap meet. "It's embarrassing," Larry Beltran Jr. told NBC Los Angeles. "I had no idea it would be all over the news or anything. That was just between me and my girlfriend."
Beltran Jr.'s aunt, Angie Cabrera, said she bought two iPhones for $80. "I thought I got a good deal, but I didn't know I put my nephew in a bad situation," Cabrera told KNBC-TV.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Joshua Dubin confirmed Beltran Jr. and his girlfriend were not the suspects. "Right now, it's still an active investigation," Dubin said.
