A Rhode Island man was shot and killed by a burglar who invaded his home last weekend hours after he posted a picture of piles of cash on Facebook, the New York Daily News reported.
Richard Catalano, of North Providence, uploaded the photo of stacks of $10, $50 and $100 dollar bills on Facebook last Sunday. The 26-year-old, who collected expensive sneakers, got the money after attending a sneaker expo in Providence, according to his friends.
A male suspect broke into Catalano's home hours later and fatally shot Catalano. He also shot Catalano's mother and bit off her finger before shooting himself in the face, police said according to the Daily News.
Catalano's family and friends believe he was targeted because of the money picture he posted online. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Dari Max Garcia, was arrested and charged with murder.
It is not clear how Garcia found out about the money- Catalano's friends suspect he either saw the photo or saw Catalano with the money and followed him home. But it appears Garcia already knew about it when he barged into the victim's home.
"The guy who came in, it was like he was on something. Just shooting. Who shoots? And says 'Where's the money?' " the victim's girlfriend, who did not want to be identified, told NBC 10.
"I saw him enter and I saw a gun and I just hid on the side of the bed with the puppies and tried not to let him see me and he saw me and he was about to shoot me but I got to crawl out just in time."
Catalano's mother was shot in the jaw and shoulder and had her finger bitten off as she tried to stop Garcia. She is currently recovering at Providence Hospital, the Daily News reported.
Police say Garcia shot himself in the head when they arrived on the scene. He was charged with first degree murder and is also recovering at a hospital.
