On Friday at The Barclays some players delivered big rounds to drastically improve their overall score after a tough first day. Rory McIlroy is one of them, who is five-under through 13 holes this afternoon.
Kevin Chappell, Brendan Todd and Jim Furyk all finished the day tied for the lead at seven-under par with Cameron Tringale (-7) and Adam Scott (-7) still playing their rounds. Henrik Stenson, Ernie Els and Bo Van Pelt all finished their rounds today and remain at six-under. Thus far, Jason Day is delivering the Friday's best round as he is seven-under through 13 holes, putting him at six-under for the tournament.
The projected cut is +1 right now and some big names remain right around that score. Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker are continuing their rounds and remain at one-over par, and Lee Westwood remains right at the cut line after completing his round. Phil Mickelson is two-over for the tournament through 15 holes today. Thus far, none of these golfers were able to bounce back from mediocre rounds on Thursday.
Rory McIlroy has though. After a three-over 74 yesterday, the Northern Irishman is five-under par for today, bringing him to two-under par for the tournament. He still has five holes to go, and it looks promising while his scorecard shows only pars and birdies. McIlroy is looking for his fourth consecutive victory on the PGA Tour following his triumphs at the British Open, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and the PGA Championship.
As for other notable names, Justin Rose is sitting at -4 with Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar with their first round 68s and second round 70s. Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson are one stroke behind them (-3) and are also done for the day. Jordan Spieth (-4) and Patrick Reed (-3) are also shooting well today with a few holes to go. But last year's champion Adam Scott is not making it easy for anyone else (-5 for the day), and the weekend looks like it'll be interesting with the tournament's $8 million purse at stake.
The 2014 Barclays tournament is taking place at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. The Par 71 course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, is 7,319 yards and opened on May 30, 1929.
