The next chapter of the Jets-Giants interstate rivalry is set to be written Friday night. Week 3 is typically a dress rehearsal for the regular season, meaning each team's starters could play well into the second half.
One ongoing position battle for the Jets is their backfield. Coach Rex Ryan has been taking the "running back by committee" approach, rotating between Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. While some critics believe Johnson is no longer an elite player, "CJ2K" disagrees.
"That's just what some people say, but people in this game know," Johnson told the New York Daily News. "I've been a guy who's never had under 1,000 yards. There's a thousand backs out there that wish they could rush for 1,000 yards. And I've done that every year of my career. So, it is what it is. ...
"I won't say that I'm not one of the best running backs in the league. But it's not about trying to see who's the best running back on this roster or who's the best running back in the league. It's about trying to win."
For the Giants, it'll be about overcoming their struggles on offense. Quarterback Eli Manning and the first-team offense didn't produced in the first two preseason games, something which coach Tom Coughlin made sure starters knew he wanted to see rectified Friday night.
"We got the message," said receiver Victor Cruz, via the team website. "We understood; he has a way of saying it that makes it very loud and very clear, so we got the message and we understood that."
