Green Bay's offense rarely has been questioned under quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The same can't be said about the Green Bay defense. Improving on defense, however, is something the Packers feel they will achieve this season.
"I always have a positive outlook on our defense, but this year, especially when you look around at the guys, they exude a certain type of energy and a certain prowess about them," Packers linebacker Clay Matthews said, via the team website. "Everyone up and down the board, it just seems like a team that's been together for a while, who really has something to prove, and I think you're going to see that. I'm excited about that. I'm excited every year, but it's about proving it."
For Oakland, in addition to getting quarterback Matt Schaub further adjusted to the offense, coach Dennis Allen will use Friday's game to further assess his front seven on defense.
"I think the biggest benefit is when you get to the regular season you start looking at a 46-man active roster," Allen told the team website. "The more guys you have that can play multiple roles, it's an advantage to you because you only have limited guys that can be up and available for a game, so I think having those guys that can play multiple roles may be at times give us the ability, if he's a defensive lineman and he can play end and tackle it might allow us to carry an extra defensive back or wide receiver or something like that which helps out with special teams."
