Google Buys Gecko Product Design Firm; Moves Startup's Small Team To Google X Labs

Google has acquired Gecko Design, its partner in product designing for the past one year, to work on Google X projects.

Google, the world's largest internet search company, is looking to expand its management with a small design team. The tech titan acquired Gecko Design in a bid to house the firm's talented employees for future projects at Google X labs. This move comes after a one-year partnership with the startup that yielded impressive results while working on Google's mysterious projects last year. The team's expertise will be used to flourish Google's extra-ordinary concepts into real-world products.

Google is said to staff Gecko's team of four in its design lab, Google X, where all the next-gen innovations take place like the Google Glass, self driving cars and Project Loon, Bloomberg reports. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"This is an incredible opportunity for everyone at Gecko," Jacques Gagne, Gecko's president and founder, wrote on the company's website. "We are very excited and honored to join Google(x) and work on a variety of cutting edge projects."

Gecko Design was founded eight years ago and conducts operations from Los Gatos, North California, which is not too far from Google's Mountain View headquarters. The company is credited for the design of a wide range of products like Nike's Fitbit, Slingbox and some HP products and also worked on the One Laptop per Child project. Besides Google, Gecko worked with renowned PC makers and tech companies such as Dell, Logitech Sonos, Aliph and HP.

Google's latest acquisition adds to a string of other takeovers in the recent months. Earlier this month, the web giant snapped image recognition specialist Jetpac, Directr - video editing app developer, and Emu, a smart texting platform.
