Earthquake in Napa Valley Is Area's Largest in 25 Years

The San Francisco Bay Area suffered its largest earthquake in 25 years just before sunrise on Sunday, sending droves of people to local hospitals, starting fires, knocking out power to thousands of residents and causing damage to historic buildings, The Associated Press reported.

The magnitude-6.0 quake, which broke water mains and gas lines and damaged some of the area's famous wineries, sent residents running for safety in the darkness. Three people were critically injured, two adults and one child.

The child was injured when a fireplace fell and was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Vanessa DeGier told CNN.

The quake shook a 10-foot chunk of brick and concrete from the corner of a county courthouse, while scared residents wandered through Napa's historic downtown, anticipating aftershocks and afraid to go to bed. Pieces of boulder-szied rubble littered the lawn and street in front of the courthouse, according to the AP.

The earthquake also caused six major fires that destroyed several mobile homes, Napa Division Fire Chief John Callanan told CNN. There is a shelter set up by the city for anyone in need of assistance.

Depending on their locations, 15,000 experienced intense shaking, 106,000 people felt very strong shaking, 176,000 felt strong shaking and 738,000 felt moderate shaking, according to the United States Geological Survey.

"I've got a lot of broken wine, being here in Napa," Emily Massimi, who was woken by the quake, told CNN. "We tend to collect wine, so I have wine all over my kitchen, and glass, and pictures off the wall and books off of bookshelves."

David Duncan, owner of Silver Oak Winder, spent the morning cleaning up hundreds of broken wine bottles that fell off the shelves, according to CNN.

"Those bottles were very unique," he said. "They were part of his private collection and worth hundreds of dollars." Duncan said he plans to open the winery today.

There have been more than 60 aftershocks, according to the USGS, ranging from 0.6 to 3.6 magnitude.
