LG announced the sale of its 65-inch 4K OLED TV priced at $11,700, making it the first company to commercialize the new technology.
LG, the second largest tech company in South Korea, is going ahead of its rivals in bringing the 4K OLED TV to the market. The tech giant announced Monday that it will start taking pre-orders for the 65-inch Ultra OLED TV starting this week, a move that is expected to replace the LCD TV standard in the near future. The sales will begin in LG's home market before expanding to other markets in North America and Europe. The first commercial 4K OLED TV with 65-inch screen comes with a hefty price tag, starting at 12 million won, about$11,700.
The new integrated technology in the television builds on the company's curved screen offerings. LG's latest 4K OLED TV packs 33 million sub-pixels to offer lifelike pictures and features multi-channel ULTRA SURROUND sound system jointly developed by audio expert Harman Kardon to compliment the TV's premium quality. LG's 4K-integration in the latest offering packs four times more pixels than the regular HD television in the market.
The latest 4K OLED TVs sport 3840x2160 pixel resolution compared to 1920x1080 pixels found on other Full HD models and 1280x720 pixels on traditional HD TVs.
"OLED TVs are expected to overtake LCD in sales within a few years and no company is better prepared for this than LG," Hyun-hwoi Ha, president and CEO of LG's home entertainment division, said in a press statement, Monday. "OLED's benefits are obvious. There's no deterioration in picture quality and issues such as image blurring, distortion and color leakage in curved LED units are simply non-existent on curved OLED TVs. 4K OLED TV represents superb value for the consumer in terms of color reproduction, contrast ratio, detail and viewing angles."
In addition to the 65-inch model, LG also revealed that a 77-incher is on its way but did not give more details. Both TVs run LG's proprietary webOS platform and pack features of the company's core concepts of "Simple Connection, Simple Switching and Simple Discovery."
The new 65-inch and 77-inch 4K OLED TVs will be on display at the upcoming IFA 2014 in Berlin next week.
