Death Row Records founder and rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot six times at a pre-VMA party hosted by Chris Brown. Family members told TMZ that Suge was hit once in the arm and five times in his stomach after shots rang out at 1OAK nightclub in West Hollywood.
The rapper was taken to a local hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Doctors expect Suge to make a full recovery, TMZ reports. The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 24) just a few hours before the MTV Video Music Awards. According to Fox 411, Suge was one of three people injured during the shooting. Reportedly bullets struck an unidentified man and woman who were also taken to a hospital and are suspected to survive.
Brown, who was co-hosting the event with Pia Mia, was not injured. As of now, it's not clear what sparked the shooting but TMZ claims tensions were already high at the nightclub. Reportedly, about an hour-and-a-half before the shooting rapper The Game tried to get inside the club with his entourage but was denied.
The Game left the club but a few of his friends stayed behind and reportedly got into a fight with the security guards, TMZ reports. Police are not sure if that altercation had any connection to the shooting inside the club. The site also claims that minutes before shots rang out at 1OAK, there was a massive brawl but it's hard to tell who was involved.
"Law enforcement sources tell us... they're focusing on gang rivalry as a possible motive for the shooting," TMZ wrote.
So far police are still searching for the shooter and MTV has denied any connection to the pre-VMA party.
