Detroit Pistons forward Josh Smith continues to be the subject of trade rumors. The Sacramento Kings and the Charlotte Hornets have been mentioned as possible destinations, but the the Pistons won't move Smith until they know whether restricted free agent Greg Monroe will sign a long-term contract.
Reports have linked Smith to the Kings, who purportedly believe adding the forward will help their chances of signing Boston Celtics star Rajon Rondo - either through a trade or through free agency next summer. Although the talks purportedly stalled, it's possible both teams reopen negotiations before training camp starts.
Smith also has been linked to the Hornets. While Charlotte purportedly is interested in Smith, Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors said he hasn't heard any confirmation of serious trade talks between Charlotte and Detroit and doubts any deal will happen.
Last season's experiment of playing Smith, Monroe and Andre Drummond together on the court failed, which now seemingly leaves Smith the odd man out. Whether Smith is actually moved, though, likely depends on what happens with Monroe.
Drummond is still on his rookie contract, which has a team option for next summer, and is unlikely to be dealt any time soon; the Pistons would likely prefer to keep Monroe over Smith, but Monroe appears to want out of Detroit.
Monroe, who reportedly declined a long-term deal from Detroit, has yet to sign his qualifying offer and seems to hope Detroit will find a sign-and-trade partner for him.
Detroit, according to at least one report, is actively looking for a potential suitor who could make a trade for Monroe worthwhile.
If the Pistons do ultimately lose Monroe, whether through a trade or through unrestricted free agency next summer, Smith is all but certain to play out the remainder of his contract in Detroit. He'd likely also improve, given the chance to play in his usual position.
