Square Releases Update for Cash App, Lets You Send Money with Texts and Emails

Square released an update for its Cash app Tuesday that allows consumers to use texts and emails to send money.

The new change to the money-sending app is part of Square's mission of making Cash more user-friendly, according to CNET. People can now send cash through texts and emails, even if the person getting the money doesn't have the app.

Cash is a free app designed for giving users the chance to use digital methods to make payments to their peers.

Additional features come with Tuesday's update, such as address book importing and user accounts getting profile pictures, TechCrunch reported. Users are also getting a unified email/phone contrast listing and incoming transfer request approval based on text messages and push notifications.

Cash has received very high ratings at the App Store, with reviewers saying it is easy to use. Unlike other apps, Cash doesn't require consumers to sign-up or create special accounts to use its services.

Square said that since Cash's debut last November, people have used the app to send and receive "hundreds of millions of dollars," CNET reported. The company added that over 25 percent of all transactions with Cash are sent across state and city lines.

"People use the free Cash app to pay for group vacations, dinner bills and even to send funds for back to school supplies, meal plans and textbooks," Square wrote in a blog post. "Cash also enables anyone to request money, even from up to 25 people at once, streamlining payment collection for sports teams, parties and events by helping groups easily manage their money."
