A producer for BET’s “106 & Park” show was suspended after guest host Karrueche Tran was made to read an inappropriate joke about Beyoncé and Jay Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy.
A source told the Associated Press the network has privately apologized to the power couple for mocking their 2-year-old daughter’s hairstyle.
During the show, Tran stated “I really did wake up like this, because my parents never comb my hair,” referring to Blue Ivy.
Stephen Hill, BET’s president of music programming and specials, took to Twitter to apologize to fans about the joke.
‘‘Last night on 106 & Park there was a stupid, unthoughtful joke made about a young child,’’ Hill tweeted.
Hill also apologized to Tran for putting her in the position to read the joke Tran took to her Twitter account to apologize for reading the joke, claiming she did not write it.
This isn’t the first time Blue Ivy’s hair has been in the spotlight. A petition on Change.org was created about three months ago urging Beyonce and Jay Z to “comb” their daughter’s hair, claiming it looked as if the parents weren’t taking care of it.
“As a woman who understands the importance of hair care. It's disturbing to watch a child suffering from the lack of hair moisture,” the petition reads. “The parents of Blue Ivy. Sean Carter A.K.A Jay-Z and Beyoncé has failed at numerous attempts of doing Blue Ivy Hair. This matter has escalated to the child developing matted dreads and lint balls. Please let's get the word out to properly care for Blue Ivy hair.”
However, many social media users came to the defense of Blue Ivy, claiming her hair is fine and people shouldn’t comment on it.
“How is @BET saying that Blue Ivy's hair wasn't combed for the #VMAs? She was obviously rocking a twist-out,” one Twitter user wrote. “That's how I wear my hair!”
