Ebola Virus Outbreak 2014: Number of Cases May Reach 20,000, WHO Says

It may seem like the Ebola virus already infected a lot of people already, but according to the World Health Organization this deadly virus is just getting started.

This Ebola outbreak in West Africa was estimated by WHO to possibly exceed 20,000 deaths before doctors conquer the disease once and for all.

"The cases are increasing. I wish I did not have to say this, but it is going to get worse before it gets better," Tom Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a news conference in Monrovia yesterday.

During this outbreak, Ebola has killed 1,552 and infected 3,069, according to WHO. The disease is spreading at an increasing rate, as over 40 percent of the total number of cases was reported in the last 21 days.

A new plan to handle the deadly virus was released by WHO in attempts to stop the spread of Ebola. The plan is expected to cost $489 million over the next nine months. It will also require 12,000 national workers to assist, as well as 750 international workers, as Dr. Bruce Aylward, WHO's assistant director-general, tells Global News.

African countries, which have the highest Ebola death toll, are also taking precautions of the spread of Ebola by ending more air services, Aljazeera reports.
