Death of Wolverine: Marvel Comics, Charles Soule to Kill Off Popular Character in New Miniseries

Marvel Comics will kill off Wolverine in a four-issue miniseries, titled "Death of Wolverine." According to CTV News, the man responsible for Wolverine's demise is Charles Soule, a New York City lawyer and comic book writer.

Soule and "Death of Wolverine" artist Steve McNiven are currently in Toronto for the pop culture convention, Fan Expo, and spoke to CTV about the new series that will end the character's long journey. Wolverine, one of the most popular X-Men characters, has been around in the comics for hundreds of years.

In real life, the character will celebrate his 40th publication anniversary in October. The first part of "The Death of Wolverine" is said to be released in September. Wolverine is known for his mutant abilities that allow him to quickly heal from injuries. The character has cheated death on many, many occasions.

"This is not supposed to be event that he bounces back from in a week," Soule told CTV News. "The idea is to have a Marvel Universe that does not have Wolverine in it for a long time."

Soule admitted that Marvel had been toying with the idea for a long time. Last year in the comics, the character lost his healing abilities setting the stage for his death.

"I think Wolverine has had death sort of hovering over him throughout his entire life," Soule told CTV.

The comic writer also said he wants Logan's final story to relate to everyone, whether they are a comic book fan or not.

"Everything you need is right there in issue one," he said. "It's a character that a lot of people who aren't even regular comics readers know very well."

The story will focus on Wolverine looking back over his life as death steadily draws closer. While some fans might be upset to see the fan-favorite character die, Soule encouraged people to look at it as a reflection of Wolverine's legacy.

"It's a chance to look at the kind of character Wolverine has been, as he goes gently into that good night," he said.

Following "The Death of Wolverine" series, Soule will be in charge of another series that deals with the aftermath of the character being killed. According to CTV News the series will run from October to December. The first issue of "The Death of Wolverine" will be released Sept. 3.

As far as plans to resurrect Wolverine from the dead, Soule said there has not been any discussion "at all about how to bring him back."

Archie Comics recently made headlines when they killed off their main character, Archie Andrews.
