Jesse Helt, the homeless man who escorted singer Miley Cyrus to Sunday's 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, turned himself in to an Oregon jail after police issued a warrant for his arrest in a probation violation.
The Associated Press reported that the 22-year-old man turned himself in to the Polk County Jail in the Willamette Valley community of Dallas, Ore., on Thursday at around 8 p.m. Martin Silbernagel, Polk County Community Corrections director, said Helt posted $2,500 bail and was released an hour later.
Silbernagel said Helt was allowed to post 10 percent from his $25,000 bail. The young man was reportedly ordered to appear before a judge in about two weeks.
Helt was arrested in 2010 for criminal mischief, after attempting to break into an apartment in Salem, Oregon. He pleaded guilty to charges including criminal trespassing. He was put on probation, which he violated the following year - in "failure to take a drug test for marijuana use, failure to report to his probation officer, breach of curfew and incomplete community service hours."
His arrest warrant was issued in November 2011 after he violated probation on several occasions, the AP reported.
Linda Helt, Jesse's mother, said she was thankful that he faced his legal obligation.
"I'm proud of him for doing what's right," she told ABC news. "I don't condone running away from a problem."
The news comes just less than a week after Helt was thrust into the spotlight while accepting Cyrus' MTA VMA for Video of the Year on her behalf. He used his time to speak for "1.6 million runaways and homeless youth who are starving, lost and scared right now."
"I know this because I am one of these people," he continued. "I've survived in shelters all over this city, I've cleaned your hotel rooms, I've been an extra in your movies, I've been an extra in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have many of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."
Helt moved to Los Angeles to become a model but has struggled to find work. He met Cyrus through the Hollywood homeless center My Friend's Place, a charity used to help homeless youths.
