Long live A&E's "Longmire."
The Wrap reported that "Longmire," which was once considered A&E's most-watched original drama series of all time, has been cancelled after suffering a steep downfall in ratings for the show's third season.
"We would like to thank the phenomenal cast, crew and producers of 'Longmire,' along with our partners at Warner Horizon, for their tireless work on three seasons of quality dramatic storytelling," the network said in a statement. "We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together."
Despite its recent cancellation, the show allegedly has a chance of surviving. According to The Wrap, a source with knowledge of the situation revealed that studio Warner Horizon is currently looking into other options for the program.
"Longmire" is based on the book series by Craig Johnson and stars actor Robert Taylor as Sheriff Walt Longmire, a man who returns home after his wife's unexpected death and works to solve cases with the support of his friends and co-workers.
The show also stars Katee Sackhoff, Bailey Chase, Adam Bartley, Cassidy Freeman and Lou Diamond Phillips.
The show premiere with an average of 4.1 million viewers, making it the No. 1 scripted show in the network's history. Season two premiered with about six million viewers; however the third season ratings suffered - with an average of 3.52 million total viewers.
Deadline reported that show ended in a major cliffhanger.
