After a tremendous first round score of 63, Ryan Palmer maintained his eight-under lead at the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship and is tied with Jason Day. A few players missed the three-over cut and hurt their chances at a spot on the Ryder Cup team.
While Palmer and Day are leading going into the third round and will tee off at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, Matt Kuchar, Billy Horschel and Russell Henley improved their position (-7) in the standings with 5-under 66's in the second round of play. Henley improved to six-under par for the tournament and sits tied for fifth with Keegan Bradley, Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson. Kuchar and Horschel are tied for third place and tee off at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday.
Kuchar rattled off six straight birdies on holes 17, 18, 1, 2, 3, and 4 to come out with a second round 66. His up-and-down round consisted of four bogeys and nine birdies, similar to Ryan Palmer who carded three bogeys and a double bogey to go along with five birdies. The par 71 TPC Boston has contributed to a number of roller coaster rounds for those participating in the second FedExCup playoff event.
This tournament is the most important for those vying for a spot on the US Ryder Cup team. Unfortunately for Brendan Todd (+4), Harris English (+4) Kevin Na (+5), Brandt Snedeker (+6), who all missed the three-over cut, have hurt their chances of being selected by Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson. Three spots remain and Watson expects to announce his selections after the weekend. Hunter Mahan (+4), who won at The Barclays last week, and Cameron Tringale (+3), who came in second, are both at the bottom of the standings and hope to finish strong to help their chances of earning a spot on the team.
Other notable players who made the cut include Jordan Spieth (-5), Martin Kaymer (-5), Jim Furyk (-4), Zach Johnson (-3), Rickie Fowler (-3), Rory McIlroy (-3), Jimmy Walker (-3), Adam Scott (-1), Bubba Watson (E), Phil Mickelson (E), and Ryan Moore (+3).
