Three students in China were stabbed to death on Monday by a man whose daughter was denied admission to the school.
The attack happened at the Dongfang Primary School in Shiyan. According to the police report, a man in his 40s stabbed eight children and an adult and then ended his life by jumping off a building, Shanghai Daily reported, citing Xinhua news agency.
The reason cited for the attack was that the man's daughter was not allowed to register for the new term because she had not finished her summer homework, state broadcaster CCTV reported on its verified account on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, without giving any details.
The local police have launched an official investigation into the incident.
In recent years, violent crimes have increased in China. Most attacks stemmed from personal grudges and in any cases the perpetrators suffered from mental health problems. A man fatally stabbed eight students at a school in China's southeastern Fujian province in 2010. Police said that the attack was due to his breakup with a girlfriend. He was executed soon afterwards, reports BBC.
The same year witnessed another knife attack that killed at least three children and injured more than 20 students and staff at a Chinese kindergarten in Shandong province.
In 2012, 22 children were injured by an attacker who stormed into a school in the central province of Henan. Earlier this year in May, another school was attacked and eight school children were injured.
