Fitness tracker maker Garmin will release a new wristband later this month that also works as a smartwatch.
The fitness tracker, called Vivosmart, is designed for non-athletes and includes features such as alerts for text messages and incoming calls, which are often found in smartwatches, according to PC Magazine.
The lightweight curved band serves as a sleeker and thinner version of its predecessor, the Garmin Vivofit. The device measures distance traveled, calories burned, hours slept, the number of steps taken in a day, and progress in getting in shape.
Alerts are also provided for emails and calendar events when the fitness tracker is connected to a smartphone, Wired reported. The display will also give previews of the notifications.
Other features include the ability to track the user's sleep based on movement and reports provided each day on the amount of time spent in movement as well as being still. Wearers can also use the Garmin Connect app to translate data into graphs and charts that are easier for them to understand.
Garmin said the Vivosmart is waterproof up to 50 meters and has a rechargeable battery that can last for up to seven days, PC Magazine reported. The device's OLED display is activated with gestures, tapping, and incoming alerts from a connected smartphone.
For the move alert, the Vivosmart will encourage the user to move and be active if they've been sitting for too long. Wearers can also activate the "find my phone" feature to sound an alarm on their phone so they can find it.
Users will also be able to connect the fitness tracker to heart-rate monitors and bike-speed sensors, as well as track different activities, PC Magazine reported.
Fitness tracker fans can soon purchase the Vivosmart at Best Buy for $169, or for $199 with a chest-strap heart-rate monitor. The wristband will be available exclusively at Best Buy before it becomes available at other retail stores.
