'Gone Girl' Star Rosmund Pike On Her Character's Persona: 'I Felt I Was Divesting Myself of Amy'

“Gone Girl” actress Rosamund Pike has given fans a little insight about David Fincher’s film adaptation of Gillian Flynn hit novel.

Pike, who plays Amy Dunne in the film, told PEOPLE she was one of the millions who were “seduced” by Flynn’s novel, which was released in 2012. The story follows the disappearance of Amy and how it affects her husband Nick Dunne.

"[Amy] reveals a lot about the female experience, both positive and negative,” Pike told PEOPLE. "It's why people are shocked by her, seduced by her.

“She reads you better than you read yourself," Pike added. "That can be incredibly powerful and incredibly alluring."

Pike explained it took her a while to shake off her Amy persona, as she fully invested herself in the character.

"It took a while to fully come back to myself," she told PEOPLE. "I went on holiday, but it wasn't really until after that that I felt I was divesting myself of Amy."

“Gone Girl” is slated to hit theaters Oct. 3. Flynn is excited to see the “toxic” marriage play out on the big screen. Flynn, who is married with two children, said she wouldn’t have been able to write “Gone Girl” had she not been with the right person.

"I joke about my husband being the muse for the most toxic marriage in the world," Flynn told PEOPLE, "because if I'd been married to a less secure man, it wouldn't have gotten written. He said to me over and over, 'Write it, don't censor yourself, don't think about the outside world and we'll figure out the rest later.' He was very responsible for this awful book about marriage!"
