At least one former NFL star isn't impressed by Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. Ex-Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward blasted Sherman for calling himself the best when he doesn't even cover the opposing team's top receiver, as evident in Seattle's win Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers.
Sherman, the league's most vocal defensive back, isn't shy when it comes to touting his accomplishments, and he's never hesitant to promote himself as the NFL's best cornerback. His claims, though, are just hot air to Ward.
"Sherman is on the cover of Madden, and he spent (Thursday night) covering Jarrett Boykin," Ward told Bleacher Report. "That's not a matchup you want to see. How can you be best when you're on a nobody? Sherman takes himself out of the game by not covering the best receiver. Sherman is top three, but he's not in the class with the best.
"Sherman is very good, but the Packers showed how to play him. They put Boykin on that side of the field, and Sherman covered him. The best (defensive backs) cover the best wide receivers. Sherman covered Boykin. Who is Boykin? You think Darrelle Revis would cover Boykin?"
Ward also said he wasn't the only one who thought that about Sherman.
"A lot of players I talk to around the league do not consider Sherman the best," said Ward. "They think he's very good but not the best. I'm not knocking Sherman. I never said he sucked. He's just not the best at what he does."
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers never passed to Boykin, which essentially took Sherman out of the game. Despite Sherman not having a hands-on impact in the game, Seattle went on to hand Green Bay a 36-16 loss while limiting Rodgers to just one touchdown.
Ward's assessment of Sherman apparently didn't sit well with the cornerback, who seemingly responded to the critique on Twitter:
