Katie Couric is mourning the loss of her mother.
The 57-year-old former "Today" show host took to Twitter Thursday to share the devastating news with millions of followers about her mother Elinor H. Couric passing away at the age of 91.
"My heart is broken. I lost my mom and best friend. We love you and miss you, Mom/Granny," she captioned a black-and-white photo of her late mother. On Facebook, Couric wrote, "She loved fiercely and was fiercely loved. We miss you, Mom/Granny. Elinor H. Couric 1923-2014."
The news comes hours before Couric is set to join celebrities such as Steve Carell and Robert Downey Jr. at the 2014 Stand Up to Cancer telethon, which will air Friday.
The TV personality thanked her fans for their encouraging words, writing, "Thanks 4 ur kind and loving words. Mom was proud of @StandUpToCancer so I am here. But my world and the world at large seems terribly off."
In 2011, the veteran newswoman and Yahoo Global News anchor lost her father to Parkinson's disease. Couric opened up about taking care of her elderly widowed mother in an interview with Woman's Day.
"My mother's day-to-day care took on a new urgency after my father passed away last year," Couric said in 2012. "Now Mom is living alone, in the same house in Virginia where we grew up...it's full of 55 years' worth of memories, and the thought of leaving it and the life she shared with my dad is understandably overwhelming."
She added: "Mom sacrificed for us her whole life, and we want to help her age with dignity, as gracefully as possible."
In June, Couric tied the knot with John Molner. She lost her first husband, Jay Monahan, in 1998 to cancer.
