Djokovic defeated Andy Murray in four sets to earn a spot in Saturday's semifinals, keeping the door open to the Serb winning his second U.S. Open title. Murray appeared to have Djokovic on the ropes through the first two sets, but the World's No. 1 player took over in the third and closed out the match.
"It was a very physical battle in the opening two and a half sets. I didn't expect anything less before the match, knowing I was facing Andy," Djokovic said, via his official website. "The last five times we've always gone over three, four hours. I'm very glad to get through to another semifinal."
Nishikori, meanwhile, is poised to deliver yet another upset. The 24-year-old first disposed of No. 5 Milos Raonic in five sets and then advanced to the quarterfinals, where he defeated No. 3 Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets.
"Kei has hands and feet that are as good as anybody who has ever played the game of tennis," famed trainer Nick Bollettieri said, via the Independent. "At 5ft 10in he's one of the smallest guys on the tour, but he has weapons. He's not afraid to come to the net. He's added about eight to nine miles per hour on his serve, though I'd like to see him add even more.
"He's a shot-maker and the crowds love him. He has a big forehand and a big backhand. Now he's starting to come to the net a lot more. I think he has to do that. He's very good at reading where the ball is going to come and he has a very sound volley. He's only just turned 24, so he still has time to develop."
