TiVo is scheduled to introduce this week a prototype of its $5,000 Mega DVR for TV fans looking to store more of their favorite shows.
The TiVo Mega can store up to 26,000 hours (three years) of SD footage, unlike HD, which allows people to watch and record 4,000 hours (about five months), according to The Verge.
24 terabytes of storing space is provided with the new device, and users will be able to stream both live and recorded TV to smartphones and tablets.
The Mega comes with six tuners for recording six shows at the same time, and users will be able to watch different shows in different rooms, The Verge reported. Instead of just a remote, viewers can use their smartphones or tablets to control the DVR.
Users will also be able to swap out data drivers, USA Today reported. The DVR is designed to be mounted on a component rack.
The Mega can also serve as a set-top box for the user's pay TV system if they add a CableCard to the product. The DVR also comes with a lifetime subscription to TiVo's service, which is $14.99 a month.
The Mega prototype will be on display this week at the CEDIA Expo in Denver, and TiVo is expected to begin selling the DVR sometime in the first quarter of 2015, according to USA Today.
"Size matters. People hate being forced to delete cool stuff from their DVR before they want to or finding a TV show they had recorded is now gone," said Ira Bahr, chief marketing officer at TiVo. "Now, with TiVo Mega they can always know their show or movie is still there to watch later. TiVo Mega offers more than twelve times the storage of any cable or satellite DVR ... (and) is the solution for the power user who wants to record everything."
