It appears that in its 11th season, "American Idol" will go through another drastic change. Just weeks after long-time judge Randy Jackson announced he would not be returning to Fox's long-running musical talent show, his two fellow judges have decided to leave the show a well.
CNN reported Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj announced Thursday they will be leaving the show as well. Carey tweeted from her official account Thursday saying "goodbye 2 idol." Fox, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment in a public statement that confirmed her departure wrote:
"Mariah Carey is a true global icon - one of the most accomplished artists on the planet - and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the 'American Idol' contestants this season," they said. "We know she will remain an inspiration to 'Idol' hopefuls for many seasons to come."
Following that, Minaj tweeted: "Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn't trade it for the world!" she wrote. "Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!"
Following that tweet, Fox, FreemantleMedia and 19 Entertainment issued another statement to confirm the Minaj's departure:
"Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to 'American Idol' and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season," they said.
Now that only one of the judges is left, Keith Urban, rumors are floating around that Fox will attempt to completely make over the show and gear it towards a younger audience in the hopes of increasing the show's declining ratings. There are rumors that former "Idol" contestant, Jennifer Hudson will take over, and possibly Kelly Clarkson.
"Idol" used to be a Nielsen ratings giant until 2012 when it lost its eight-year streak as the most watched program. Nothing is clear now as to the future of the show but it does not seem that Fox is anywhere close to pulling the plug just yet. Next season will look to revamp the show completely and take steps to renew its high ratings. A brand new panel of judges might be just the way to do that.
