Director Coulson and his remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents may have to look back to their agency's roots, specifically founding member Agent Carter, before they can piece it back together in the wake of the HYDRA revelation.
Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter will make a guest appearance in the season two premiere of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team are now working as fugitives in an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. bunker, but continue their mission to keep "the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere," according to ABC.
ABC did not reveal how her character would appear, either in flashback or present day. Atwell was last seen in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" as an older version of Peggy Carter. She will star in ABC's new Marvel series "Agent Carter" this midseason that will explore her part in the formation of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Good Morning America" and "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos will also star as himself in the premiere episode. He recently appeared in an episode of Netflix's "House of Cards," also as himself.
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will welcome back a few familiar faces, as well as introduce a bevy of new characters within the first episode. Patton Oswalt will quasi-reprise his role, this time as Agent Billy Koenig, and Adrian Pasdar will return as General Glenn Talbot. B.J. Britt also solidified his spot on Coulson's team as Agent Antoine Triplett last season.
The other new agents include Nick Blood as Agent Lance Hunter, Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle "Izzy" Hartley and Henry Simmons as Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie, a mechanic recruited by Coulson. Reed Diamond will star as HYDRA baddie Daniel Whitehall and Brian Patrick Wade will play Carl Creel a.k.a. the Absorbing Man. Also guest-starring are Wilmer Calderon as Idaho, Matthew Glave as Roger Browning, Simon Kassianides as Sunil Bakshi and Raquel Gardner as Carla Talbot.
Season two will also introduce Adrianne Palicki as Marvel superspy Bobbi Morse, a.k.a. Mockingbird, and Kyle MacLachlan as Skye's (Chloe Bennet) father.
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." premieres in its new timeslot on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9 p.m.
