Amazon, the largest online retailer, has made a big move ahead of the anticipated unveiling of the iPhone 6. The e-commerce giant has dropped the price of the Fire phone on AT&T's channel to almost nothing. Of course, a two-year contract is standard on the purchase, but the massive reduction is on the upfront payment, down from $199 to just 99 cents.
Amazon's latest price drop on Fire phone on Monday is for the 32GB model. Those who pick up the Fire phone on AT&T's two-year contract for 99 cents will have unlimited cloud storage for photos, unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows through a 12-month free Prime subscription, free two-day shipping and a lot more.
Amazon's Fire phone hasn't managed to secure a prominent place in the smartphone space. The competition from well-established giants like Samsung, Apple and others has left the e-commerce giant struggling to sell its Fire phone. But the additional perks like the Prime membership and unlimited photo storage might play in the retailer's favor.
According to a report by New York Times, owners of Fire phone raised several concerns related to the phone's functions and features. Few pros like the call voice clarity do not outweigh the cons of shorter battery life and overheating phone. Despite the shortcomings, Amazon hopes the smartphone will attract buyers and revealed plans to introduce the Fire phone in Britain and Germany.
The Amazon phone ranks number 1 in the retailer's best-selling contract phone list and is the only smartphone in the Top 20 most wished items in the electronics category.
