Dwight Howard will officially become a free agent in exactly one month. Thus far the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets appear to be the top contenders for Howard's services, ESPN reports.
A source close to Howard said that the Rockets have received "hopeful signals" from Howard that the center is seriously considering them, according to ESPN. All-Star James Harden could be the biggest draw for Howard, along with seven-foot-tall Omer Asik in the frontcourt.
Harden will likely be active this summer in recruiting free agents to Houston. When asked by reporters if he'd try to bring Howard, Harden smiled and said, "Maybe. Possibly."
The Lakers can offer Howard a five-year deal worth nearly $120 million, but it's uncertain if Howard wans to play in Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant, who is recovering from an Achilles tear, is uncertain for next season. Howard was also reportedly frustrated with Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni, who general manager Mitch Kupchak has said he intends to retain for next season.
The Dallas Mavericks are also reportedly trying to woo both Howard and free agent Chris Paul to Dallas to join All-Star Dirk Nowitzki.
While Howard struggled at times last season, his former coach Stan Van Gundy still believes he is the premier center in the NBA.
"Come on, that one's not close," Van Gundy said on Open Mike when asked whether Pacers center Roy Hibbert is better. "You could put that question to 30 general managers in the league - and give them the choice - and Indiana, out of loyalty, might take Hibbert although I would doubt it. The other 29 would not even hesitate. Everybody's taking Dwight."
