Mercedes-Benz Unveils Highly Anticipated AMG GT Sports Car (PHOTOS)

Mercedes-Benz added a new car to its performance division. The all-new 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT, Mercedes' latest sports car, was unveiled at an event in Affalterbach, Germany, after several leaked shots of the GT's engine, interiors and its outline.

The German car maker has finally decided to settle the dust on months of teasers with the first official look at the car. According to Mercedes, the AMG GT is designed to perform like a beast on the racetracks and also suits daily commutes. The two-door sports car with a long hood and broad rear end with a truck lid is competing with Porsche 911, new BMW i8 plug-in hybrid and Jaguar F-Type.

Starting next April, the AMG GT will go on sale in the U.S. market with an expensive price tag. The coupe will be available in two models, equipped with an entry-level 462 horsepower engine and a high-end S-Model with 510 horsepower engine. Prices are expected to start from about $120,000, Auto News reported.

Both models will draw power from an AMG-built 4.0-liter V8 biturbo, attaining zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 193 mph. This justifies the GT label, which stands for Grand Touring, for fast, comfortable drives. The car's low-profile built is suitable for getting maximum power and full control even in high cornering speeds, Mercedes said.

Mercedes has mainly used aluminum components for the car's build. The chassis, greenhouse and body use aluminum alloy and the trunk lid is steel. The body shell weighs 509 pounds, setting a new standard in the sports car segment, Mercedes said.

The button-start feature enables the racecar feel and the display is positioned for minimal distraction. The Mercedes-AMG GT also borrows safety features from the S-class sedan, such as the collision-prevention systems, adaptive brakes, a parking assist system and a rearview camera.
