The Ohio teen who murdered three students and injured three others at Chardon High School escaped from prison.
Five hours later, two state patrol officers found him 100 yards away from the correctional facility at 1:20 a.m.
T.J. Lane and two other inmates fled from Allen Correctional Facility in Lima, Ohio shortly before 8 p.m. on Sept. 11, according to NBC News. The Lima Police Department managed to capture one inmate shortly after their escape.
A judge sentenced Lane to three, consecutive life-sentences in March 2013. Lane wore a shirt that read "KILLER" to his sentence hearing. He wore a similar t-shirt the day he committed his crime.
The other missing convict was Clifford Opperud, 45 years old, who was sentenced for aggravated robbery, burglary and kidnapping, according to prison records. Police captured him three hours after Lane.
"You never plan on someone escaping and certainly someone of that notoriety, you would think that they would take special precautions to prevent this," Lane's attorney Ian Friedman told CNN. "This was a huge case here in Ohio. So, everyone in Ohio is shocked right now.
Lima Police Sgt. Andy Green did not have details on how the inmates escaped, according to NBC News. The department posted warnings on Facebook and Twitter for residents to not allow any suspicious persons in their house or pick up hitchhikers.
"We are going to consider them definitely dangerous. At this point, they've been out for two hours, they could be armed right now," Green told NBC News.
The Allen County Sheriff's Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and Lima police have all mobilized their tactical teams in the manhunt, according to Green. Extra police have been dispatched to Lane's family and the families of his victims, according to CNN.
They have begun their search on the west side of the prison and will spread out throughout the neighborhoods, according to social media posts. Police ask that residents do not tweet or post officers' specific locations.
Interstate 75 runs parallel to the facility on the east side and U.S. Route 30 is to the north. Allen Correctional Facility is located in Western Ohio near the Indiana border and about 80 miles south of Toledo.
Chardon is located in Northeast Ohio, about 30 miles outside of Cleveland. The small town has just over 5,000 residents.
