Shooting at Pennsylvania Police Barracks Leaves 1 Dead

A shooting at a Pennsylvania police barracks left one state trooper dead and another injured, police confirmed early Saturday.

According to the initial reports, the incident happened at state police barracks in Blooming Grove Twp., Pike County. Investigators are searching for the suspect.

Several police and emergency vehicles responded and road blocks were set up following the incident. State police spokeswoman Maria Finn confirmed the death and injury early this morning. State police in Dunmore confirmed the shooting happened at about 11 p.m. on Friday.

Blooming Grove is a township of about 4,000 people about 35 miles east of Scranton. The Blooming Grove station is in a wooded area, surrounded by state game lands, about 6 miles east of Lake Wallenpaupack, nearly 2 miles north of Exit 30 of Interstate 84.

Officials did not release further details related to the incident and Lackawanna County dispatched its SWAT team. Helicopters were seen flying over the area, reported the Associated Press. WNEP television station also reported that the Pike County coroner was called to the scene.

According to The Times-Tribune.com, outside the police barracks was a carved stone monument with a silhouette of a state trooper and the inscription, "Remember the fallen."

A nearby resident said that he heard shots at 11:30 p.m. near the state police barracks at 434 Route 402, Blooming Grove Twp.

Roads around the barracks, including parts of Routes 402 and 6 and Interstate 84, were closed this morning.
