South Carolina plummeted in the rankings from No. 9 after open season with a 52-28 blowout loss to Texas A&M. Although the Gamecocks bounced back with a 33-23 win against East Carolina, the relatively close game dropped them another three spots in the AP poll to No. 24.
The game still earned them a win, though. After being limited to just 15 yards on six carries against Texas A&M, junior running back Mike Davis bounced back with a 101-yard and two-touchdown game against East Carolina, and senior quarterback Dylan Thompson managed to game with 266 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
"Three weeks ago, we were advertised as the top team in the East and now (No. 6 Georgia is) advertised as the top team in the East so a lot can change as we all know, but they're coming to our place," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier told the Associated Press. "... We're believing we can play a lot better, but we need to go do it on the field. This would be a good week to show that."
South Carolina hopes to carry the momentum of last week's victory into Saturday against the visiting Bulldogs, who are 1-0 after handing Clemson a 45-21 loss on Aug. 30.
Georgia's running game had its way with Clemson for much of the game, with junior tailback Todd Gurley rushing for 198 yards and finishing with three touchdowns, and freshman Nick Chubb adding 70 yards and a score.
Although Georgia snapped their three-game losing streak at South Carolina last season, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt doesn't expect visiting Williams-Brice Stadium to be any easier.
"We've got our work cut out for us. We've got to perform better than we have in that venue, offensively especially," said Richt, referring to Georgia only scoring more than 18 points once in their last nine visits. "We're looking forward to the challenge of it."
