The Washington Redskins earned a win in their home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Robert Griffin III was carted off the field in the first quarter. The Miami Dolphins also lost running back Knowshon Moreno in the first quarter in their game against the Bills.
Despite Griffin's injury, the Redskins defeated the Jaguars 41-10 on Sunday. The former Baylor quarterback was carted off the field after being chased down by Tyson Alualu near the sideline. Griffin jumped out of the Alualu's reach and completed a 19-yard pass to DeSean Jackson before falling to the ground and injuring his left ankle.
Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins entered the game and threw the first touchdown pass of the afternoon on the drive that RGIII had originally led down the field. Cousins finished with 250 yards on 22/33 passing with two touchdowns to help Washington earn their first win of the season. Running back Alfred Morris also rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns and Silas Redd added 41 yards on eight carries with a touchdown.
It has been confirmed that RGIII suffered a dislocated ankle earlier today and wide receiver DeSean Jackson sustained an AC joint sprain. Jackson also exited the game in the first quarter and did not return, but he is only considered day-to-day and should be fine moving forward.
The Miami Dolphins suffered two crucial injuries of their own today. Running back Knowshon Moreno left the game against the Buffalo Bills after his first carry due to a dislocated elbow, while running back Lamar Miller did not return to action after injuring his ankle in the second half. Moreno is expected to four weeks, but Miller will likely return to practice this week. The team said Miller's ankle injury would have allowed him to return in the second half, but since the Dolphins were trailing considerably they opted to keep him out. Head coach Joe Philbin did not view their absences as an excuse for the Dolphins 29-10 loss in Buffalo.
"Obviously, we'd love to have him, but you have to deal with those things," he said of Moreno in this ESPN article. "They pop up in football. Injuries happen. So it didn't really impact the game plan. Other guys have to step up. That's football. If a guy gets injured you can't really alter things."
