HBO has yet to release a cast list for "True Detective" season two and the possibilities for the lone female role have more than tripled.
Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams stood as the role's frontrunners, but the gritty crime drama has called back seven actresses to reread for the part, according to The Wrap. The website identified the female character as Ani Bezzerides, "a tough, no-nonsense Monterey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol."
Brit Marling, Oona Chaplin and Kelly Reilly make up the lesser known, but still accomplished actresses auditioning for the role. They will compete against Jessica Biel, Malin Ackerman, Jamie Alexander and the aforementioned Moss and McAdams.
HBO and "True Detective" still seem keen on Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn for the three male leads, according to The Wrap. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto has only confirmed the show's four lead roles and its California location.
The Wrap has obtained brief, unofficial character synopses for the three actors. In addition to the Bezzerides character, Farrell and Kitsch will play the other two law enforcement officers brought in to investigate the death of a corrupt city manager.
Farrell is circling the role of Ray Velcoro, "who has been damaged by years of turmoil in both his personal and professional lives." Kitsch would likely play Paul Woodrugh, "a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction."
Vaughn's possible character, Frank Seymon, is described as "a former thug-turned-businessman who's working with a local mayor and his political cohorts to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system that links Southern California to Northern California in order to reap financial gains from federal grants and land purchases." The murder may be connected to this transportation deal.
HBO will likely premiere the second season of "True Detective" next summer.
