Chris Young had a No. 1 hit with "Voices," a song he co-wrote about how listening to the voices in his mind of his dad, granddad and grandma giving him good advice makes him a better person. So it's no surprise that Young is a man who knows that keeping a promise means something.
In "Voices," written with top Nashville songwriters Craig Wiseman and Chris Tompkins, Young penned a chorus about the growing-up advice from his family that keeps rolling around in his head.
Sometimes I try to ignore 'em
But I thank God for 'em
'Cause they made me who I am
Back in June, Young and his fan club members pledged to raise $30,000 for the Nashville School of the Arts. The money was to help update the NSA school's auditorium. The Tennessee school offers its students a combination of a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and intense instruction in the performing or visual arts.
Last week, Young, a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., visited with students, faculty and administrators of the NSA to be a part of the student-produced program "NSA Presents." The country star, who was a YoungArts alumni and recipient of the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts award while he was a student in Middle Tennessee, held true to his promise. During the program's opening on Sept. 9, Young made a presentation of his own - donating $30,000 to the school to help with the auditorium renovation.
Young hit the road after his big day at The Nashville School of the Arts. And just a week after keeping his word to the school kids, he performed a sold-out show at Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth. The sprawling, one-of-a-kind Lone Star State venue is heralded as "The World's Largest Honky Tonk."
Young's latest single is "Lonely Eyes," the third hit from his current album "A.M." The album has already racked up his sixth chart-topper and the Top 5 hit "AwNaw."
