The Islamic State group released a video showing a British man who identifies himself as journalist John Cantlie on Thursday and says he is a prisoner of the extremists, according to Reuters.
In a three-minute video shot with three cameras, Cantlie identifies himself as a photojournalist who worked for publications including The Sunday Times, The Sun and The Sunday Telegraph, Reuters reported.
Cantlie said he came to Syria in November 2012 and was subsequently captured by the Islamic State group, according to Reuters.
The group now controls almost a third of Syria and Iraq and have already beheaded two American journalists and a British aid worker, Reuters reported. The group has threatened to kill another British hostage.
The clip released Thursday by the Islamic State group's media arm, Al-Furqan, was different than previous videos because no Islamic State fighters appear in the video and is entitled "Lend me Your ears," according to Reuters. It is taped in lecture-like "programs" in which Cantlie says he will reveal "the truth" about the Islamic State group.
In the video, Cantlie is wearing an orange T-shirt and sitting behind a desk and criticized the war on the Islamic State group and said he and other British and U.S. hostages have been abandoned by their governments, Reuters reported.
"Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, 'He's only doing this because he's a prisoner. He's got a gun at his head and he's being forced to do this.' Right?" Cantlie says, according to Reuters.
"Well, it's true. I am a prisoner. That I cannot deny. But seeing as I've been abandoned by my government and my fate now lies in the hands of the Islamic State, I have nothing to lose," the video continues, Reuters reported.
"After two disastrous and hugely unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, why is it that our governments appear so keen to get involved in yet another unwinnable conflict?" the man says in the video, according to Reuters.
