“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” revealed Skye’s father, at least some of him, in its season one finale. His blood-dripping left arm held up his daughter’s picture given to him by Raina, the girl in the flower dress.
Kyle MacLachlan joined the “SHIELD” cast last month to play the recurring role of the mysterious man, who still remains unnamed. Chloe Bennett prefers to call him “Dad,” even off screen.
“You might think I’m weird because every time I see him, I’m like, ‘Dad!’ I just yell it to him. I never even call him Kyle. I just call him Dad,” Bennett told Marvel.com. “He’s wonderful. I’m really excited. I’ve never had an onscreen dad before, so that’s going to be fun for me.”
Skye will have some more immediate issues to deal with before she can face her father. The computer hacker carried her official S.H.I.E.L.D. badge for one whole day before the agency collapsed in the wake of Hydra’s return. The challenging first season has changed her dramatically from the beginning of season one.
“She’s a lot wiser now. She has a kind of quietness and calmness about her, and an inner strength that I don’t think had surfaced yet last year,” Bennett said. “She’s a lot edgier, a lot darker, and she feels more grounded to me this season.”
Her closest friend and training officer, Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), threw her for a loop at the end of last season when he revealed himself as a covert Hydra member. Bennett won’t give up on a potential SkyeWard relationship sometime down the road, despite her love interest’s bad behavior.
"We’ll see more of Skye and Ward’s interaction, for sure. It’s not dead! We wouldn’t do that! They wouldn’t do that to us, I don’t think,” she said. “I still ship Skyeward.”
Bennett will see more physical action this season and she has trained for months to prepare. Her on-screen alter-ego has also been working out with Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) to prepare for S.H.I.E.L.D.’s next missions under the newly-installed Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).
“At this point it is illegal to be an agent after S.H.I.E.L.D. was dissolved and the people who are still working for S.H.I.E.L.D. are doing it purely because it’s the right thing to do and I think that’s something that has been a big part of Skye,” she said. “’This is the right thing to do so I’m going to do it no matter what, no matter how difficult it is, this is what I’m going to do. I’m going to stick up for what’s right.’”
The second season of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
