Not wanting to feel left out in the cold as the only major network with a super hero-related show, CBS announced today that they were adding a Supergirl show to their slate. CBS making a strong play with Supergirl is just good business sense: Fox has "Gotham," NBC has "Constantine," and ABC has "Agents of SHIELD." The "Eye Network" needed a show in this genre to stay competitive, moving forward.
Deadline is reporting that CBS has placed a series order for Supergirl, and received a bigger commitment from CBS than "Gotham" did from Fox. The series is being created in part by one of the producers behind CW's popular "Arrow" and the upcoming "Flash," Greg Berlanti.
The show itself will focus on Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, as she's finally coming to terms with who she is, and is beginning to use her powers at age 24. Supergirl was created at DC Comics in 1959 by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino. Kara was born on the planet Krypton, but escaped during its destruction as did Kal-El (Superman). Since her arrival on Earth, she's been concealing the powers she shares with her renowned cousin.
There's been no word as of yet as to who would be cast (or who is even in the running) to play Kara, but here's hoping that whoever it is can really rock the iconic, red-and-blue costume.
There also has been no indication as to when the show will make an apperance on-air. Stay tuned for more information as it develops.
