Popeye, the sailor "who fights to the finish 'cause he eats his spinach," will be making a return to the big screen sometime in 2016.
An animation test reel, along with a short introduction by the man who is heading up this project, Genndy Tartakovsky ("Dexter's Lab" and "Samurai Jack"), was released today.
Tartakovsky described the footage as an "animation test" by Sony Pictures Animation and it is "not a clip, it's not a trailer, it's nothing from the actual movie," Tartakovsky stated in the YouTube video interview. "It's just something that kind of represents what we want to do. I couldn't be more excited by how it turned out."
Judging by the looks of it, this "test" has turned out quite well. It truly captures the overall look and kinetic madness of the original cartoons. Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto, and even Eugene the Jeep, all look, act and sound as you remember them.
Here's to hoping the burger-loving Wimpy makes an appearance somewhere in the next trailer and/or release. Check out the footage below to judge for yourself:
"Popeye" was created in 1929 by E.C. Segar and ran as a King Features Syndicate newspaper comic strip before making the jump to animated features in 1933, which were produced by Fleischer Studios.
