GM’s New High-End Flagship Cadillac To Debut Next Year

General Motors announced the expansion of its Cadillac lineup with a new luxurious flagship model set to debut during the first half of next year with production starting in Q4 2014.

General Motors, one of the largest car-making companies, will soon be adding a new member to its luxury car brand that will compete against the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and others. GM is looking to regain its lost position in the luxury car segment with an all-new Cadillac sedan that will feature "top-end, high-technology." According to the car maker's official press release, Friday, the new Cadillac will enter production in the fourth quarter of 2015 but is expected to make a public debut during the first half.

Cadillac did not reveal the name of its upcoming sedan, which will add and not replace any of its existing models. The new Cadillac will be manufactured at its Detroit-Hamtramck-based assembly plant, where the car maker has invested $384 million.

"The objective for this upcoming model is to lift the Cadillac range by entering the elite class of top-level luxury cars," Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen, said in a press release. "Currently in development, this new rear wheel drive-oriented sedan uses completely new, custom-designed materials on unique vehicle architecture. In addition to new technology in the car itself, we are instituting innovative manufacturing techniques to assemble it with the precision deserving of a luxury make."

Cadillac's most recent releases include the XTS, ATS and ELR. The XTS is currently the automaker's biggest sedan that sells in the $45,000 range and the ATS is the entry-level luxury sedan while the electric version of the Cadillac sedan is the ELR.

Despite the new launches, Cadillac failed to sustain the increasing competition from its rivals Audi, Infiniti and BMW, which rose by double digits as of this June in the U.S. Cadillac recorded a 1.9 percent drop in sales compared to the same period last year. Just last month, the luxury car brand's sales dipped 18 percent, most of which came from the CTS sedan, Bloomberg reported.

The car maker did not give any details on the car's specs and features. Other details, including the car's name are expected to be announced "soon," GM said.
