Apple Sells Over 10 Million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Units in Opening Weekend

Apple continues to set new sales records with its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, this time selling over 10 million units of the devices in the first three days of their launch.

The report follows the latest record set by the Cupertino, California-based tech giant, which was 4 million pre-orders for the two new iPhones in less than 24 hours, according to The Verge. The company was also able to beat sales for its iPhone 5C and 5S by 1 million. The two devices were sold last year and made a combined 9 million in sales.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said the sales the company achieved this past weekend with their new iPhones were greater than they expected.

"We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin," he said. "While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are looking hard to fill orders as quickly as possible."

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were first made available on Friday for $199 in 10 regions, which included the U.S., Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia, The Wall Street Journal reported. However, the devices have yet to be made available in China.

Anticipation for new features played a role in new iPhones' sales, one of which is their screens, which are bigger than older models.

Sales were also achieved through deals offered by wireless carriers, The Wall Street Journal reported. Verizon Wireless, for example, is letting people trade in their old iPhones and signing up for a two-year contract to get an iPhone 6 for free.

Apple said it will make the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus available in over 20 more countries by Friday, adding that the devices will go on sale in 115 countries by the end of the year.
