Pole dancing is no longer an activity associated only with strippers.
The founder of a Las Vegas pole dancing studio tells The Associated Press most of their participants are regular women who are just looking for a good workout.
"Most people that pole dance in the studios are everyday women, not strippers," said Fawnia Dietrich, who got her start as a stripper but has since founded a Las Vegas studio offering fitness-focused pole classes. "It has that connotation of sensuality or eroticism that makes it a little more fun."
Women who pole dance for exercise often still wear skimpy outfits because bare skin makes it easier to grip onto the poles. Some wear stilettos while performing the exercise because they can help grip the pole as well. Others choose to go barefoot.
