Director Phil Coulson will start to rebuild the organization once known as S.H.I.E.L.D. this season on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Flashback almost 70 years and actor Shea Whigham will handle a similar task as Strategic Scientific Reserve Chief Roger Dooley on “Marvel’s Agent Carter.”
Whigham’s character Dooley will oversee Hayley Atwell’s Agent Peggy Carter and her colleagues Thompson (Chad Michael Murray) and Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) when the prequel series premieres at midseason, according to Deadline.
The Chief will be considered the male lead on the show starring Atwell, who originated her role in the films “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” as well as the short “Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.”
“The Boardwalk Empire” star will end his run as the younger brother of Steve Buscemi’s Nucky on the HBO series this fall. He also had a recurring role on the first season of “True Detective” as Pastor Joel Theriot.
“Agent Carter” will air during the winter hiatus for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” The show’s timeframe will occur after the first “Captain America” film but before the short film’s action.
Howard Stark has Agent Carter running secret missions for him while the Strategic Scientific Reserve has the female agent handling administrative tasks in the office. She’s also still grieving over the loss of her true love, Steve Rodgers a.k.a. Captain America.
James D’Arcy recently joined the cast as Stark’s butler and close ally for Carter. Whether his boss will make an on-screen appearance remains a mystery, as it will depend on the availability of Dominic Cooper, who played Stark in the first “Captain America” and the “One-Shot.” The film and stage actor has expressed interest in reprising his role on the TV series.
Atwell will make a guest appearance in the "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" premiere during a flashback scene. Her "Captain America" co-stars Kenneth Choi (as Jim Morita) and Neal McDonough (as Dum Dum Dugan) will appear alongside her. No word on whether those two actors will also recur on "Agent Carter."
“Marvel’s Agent Carter” will premiere in January 2015 on ABC. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
